Firmly opposed to the pension reform, Mathilda joined the ranks of the CGT just over two weeks ago. This 27-year-old hairdresser who has already participated in several towing operations affirms it: her commitment within the union organization was motivated by the social mobilization of recent months.
There are more and more profiles like Mathilda. This is demonstrated by the sharp increase in registrations for the CGT since January.
“We are multiplying memberships by 2.5 compared to a normal year. They are rather young: 40% of us are under 40 and a third are under 30. It is encouraging and we hope it will continue”, greets Pascal Cherel , responsible for new affiliations at CGT Rennes.
“The profiles we see arriving are very different”
The trend can also be seen at Force Ouvrière, where 2,765 workers of various origins had applied to join the union through a boarding school as of March 31, already more than half of the 4,700 membership applications received in 2022. .
“The profiles that we see arrive are very different. There is also (…) the cleaning lady of an individual who asks to join or employees of very small businesses who also want to join when they are public, only that it is difficult to capture “, emphasizes Cyrille Lama, confederal secretary of FO.
Finally, the CFDT, the main union in France, stated in early February that it had already registered close to 10,000 members since January. That’s 40% more than normal.
