Jobless claims rose more than expected in the United States for the week to April 29, to 242,000 from 229,000 (revised) the week before, the Labor Department announced Thursday.
Economists expected an average of 240,000 jobless claims. Registration for the week through April 22 has been revised down from an initial estimate of 230,000. The four-week moving average stands at 239,250 from 235,750 (revised) the previous week.
The number of regular recipients of benefits rose to 1,805 million during the week to 22 April (last week for which these figures are available) compared to 1,843 million (revised) in the previous week.
