More expensive petrol and cheaper diesel in Portugal compared to the EU average in the 1st quarter

The average selling price of regular 95 petrol in Portugal in the first quarter of this year was 6.0 cents per liter higher than EU27 averages, while that of regular diesel was 9.0 cents lower, second data from ERSE.

According to the EU-27 (European Union 27) price bulletin on fuels, released this Friday by the Entidade Reguladora dos Serviços Energéticos (ERSE), for simple 95 petrol, “Portugal presented an average sales price and a average pre-tax price higher than the average values ​​verified in the EU-27, in the order of 6.0 cents/l [cêntimos por litro] respectively 4.9 cents/l.

The ERSE bulletin also points out that given the prices of simple petrol 95 without taxes, “Portugal ranks seventh among countries selling this most expensive fuel in the EU-27, with a price corresponding to a difference of 26.3 cents/l and 9.5 cents/l compared to the country with the lowest prices, lowest prices and the country with the highest prices respectively”.

Of the eight countries analyzed in more detail – Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands – “Spain had the lowest average selling price, about 4.8 cents/l lower than the average price charged in Portugal”, notices. ERS.

With regard to simple diesel, “Portugal presented in Q1 2023 average prices with taxes 9.0 cents/l lower than the average values ​​verified in the EU-27”, and “without taxes, the national values. ​were 2.7 cents/l lower than the average values ​​found in the EU-27”.

“Portugal imposed a tax burden on the average price of simple diesel in the quarter under review of the order of 41.6%, a value lower than the average recorded in the EU-27 (43.2%)”details ERSE.

The regulator points out that this is the “second lowest tax burden of the eight countries analyzed in more detail, about 1.5 percentage points lower than the average tax burden in the EU-27 and about 9.8 percentage points higher than the average tax burden verified in Italy, the country with the highest tax burden” .

And he adds: “The reduction in the tax burden applied in Portugal has contributed to the fact that the average sales prices of this fuel on the national market are about 3.8% lower than the average prices in Spain”.

In the fourth quarter, and of the eight countries analyzed in more detail, Portugal had the lowest average price for diesel with taxes, about 6.0 cents/l lower than the average price in Spain. Excluding the tax effect, the national average price of this fuel was 5.2 cents/l below the values ​​reported in Spain.

Considering the average prices of basic diesel without taxes, “Portugal ranks seventh among the countries that sell this fuel cheaper in the EU-27, four positions higher than in the previous quarter”.

The price charged corresponds to a difference of 36.5 cents/l and 37.8 cents/l respectively compared to the country with the lowest prices and the country with the highest prices

Finally, with respect to Automotive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Auto LPG), in the first quarter, “domestic prices, with and without taxes, were lower than those in Spain”.

According to ERSE, “compared to the EU-27 average, national PMV was 3.3 cents/l higher, but excluding taxes, national prices were 4.3 cents/l below the European average”.
