The Minister of Agriculture defends the appointment of a press advisor for the agri-food lobby

The High Authority for the Transparency of Public Life (HATVP) has given the green light to the appointment of Sophie Ionascu, Ania’s former director of communication, as a press advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, on the condition that “she does not contact your previous employer.

The Minister of Agriculture Marc Fesneau defended this Tuesday the appointment of his new communication adviser, from the main organization of agri-food manufacturers (Ania), validated with reservations by the High Authority for the Transparency of Public Life (HATVP).

The HATVP “gave the green light” to the appointment of Sophie Ionascu, Ania’s former communication director, with a limit: that of “not contacting her previous employer,” Marc Fesneau told Franceinfo. “She is a communication advisor, she is not going to be in charge of the agri-food industry file,” the minister quickly dismissed.

The High Authority issued on May 2 “a compatibility opinion” on this appointment, although it subjected it to reservations “to prevent any ethical or criminal risk.” “The interested party must withdraw from any discussion or decision related to Ania: they must also refrain from intervening in any way, directly or indirectly, in any decision related to an operation of interest to this association,” according to the opinion consulted.

“Conflict of Interest Trial”

He will also have to “stay away from meetings and exchanges organized with this association.” These reserves are valid for three years from their departure from the National Association of Food Industries. Sophie Ionascu took office on Tuesday in Marc Fesneau’s cabinet.

Asked about his appointment during his interview with Franceinfo, the minister was irritated by a “conflict of interest trial”, highlighting the competence of his new adviser: “I can also take people who know nothing, an operetta singer, as well there will be no risk of conflict of interest”, he joked.

The minister’s office has registered several departures in recent months, particularly from the position of communication adviser. Sophie Ionascu’s predecessor, Yoann Taieb, was appointed on February 15, 2023, and his position had been vacant since mid-April. Sophie Ionascu spent six years in communication at Ania, including almost two years as director.
