The number of unemployed people registered with job centers fell 6% year-on-year in April, after falling 3.5% compared to the previous month, the government announced on Monday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security said that the unemployment recorded in April (295,422 people) had fallen, “with a decrease of -3.5% (-10,735 people) compared to the previous month and -6 .0% below the level observed in April 2022 (-19,013 people)”.
At the same time, the number of unemployed young people registered with the IEFP – Institute for Employment and Vocational Training has also decreased again, “being the smallest ever (31,872 people), in the months of April, with a chain decrease of 6.9% (-2,360 young people), and a decrease of 1.7% (-561 young people) compared to the same month”intended guardianship.
As for long-term unemployment, it registered “a chain drop of 0.7% (-798 people), 24.4% below its April 2022 level (-37,764 people),” the government said.
For example, between March and April of this year, “registered unemployment in a chain fell in all regions, highlighting the 21.8% drop in the Algarve”.
Finally he pointed to custody, “at the sectoral level, there were chain declines in all economic sectors”, namely in agriculture (-9.0%), secondary (-1.6%) and tertiary (-3.5%)”.
Year-over-year declines were also recorded across all sectors, with agriculture falling 1.7%, secondary 3.9% and tertiary 5.0%, he concluded.
According to data released today by the IEFP, at the end of April there were “a total of 15,468 vacancies in the employment services across the country”, and this number corresponds to an annual decline of 23.4% and a reduction compared to the previous month, from 6.9% of offers.
According to the institute, 37,135 unemployed people registered with the employment services during the whole month of April, a number that is “lower than that observed in the same month of 2022 (-512; -1.4%) and also in relation to the previous month (-10,990; -22.8%)”.
The entity also disclosed that the “job vacancies received during this month totaled 8,782 across the country”, a figure lower than that of the same month, at 25.9% and lower compared to the previous month at 40.4% .
“The economic activities most reflected in the job vacancies received during the month (Mainland data), in descending order, were the following: ‘real estate, administrative and support services’ (23.1%), the ‘accommodation, catering and similar’ (16.0%) and ‘wholesale and retail’ (14.7%),” according to the IEFP.
In turn, the month of April saw a total of 7,647 placements nationwide, according to the IEFP, which concluded that this number is “15.4% lower than that in the same period of 2022” and also lower compared to the previous month by 15.3%.
According to the institute, the analysis of placements by occupational groups on the continent “shows a greater concentration of ‘unskilled workers’ (34.8%), of ‘personal services, protection and security workers and salespeople’ (22.0% ), and in ‘administrative staff’ (9.9%)”.
