New storm warning for Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, one of the world leaders in 5G equipment. According financial timesThe European Union is considering banning its members from using companies that pose a security risk on its 5G network, including the Chinese group Huawei.
The move comes amid concerns in Brussels that some EU member countries are slow to act on it, officials told the newspaper.
Some Huawei critics say its ties to Chinese security services could facilitate spying on Beijing, a charge the company and the Chinese government deny, saying they were motivated by a desire to support non-Chinese rivals (Nokia, Ericsson).
Huawei banned in the United States
EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton told EU telecoms ministers on Friday that only a third of member countries had implemented bans against Huawei in critical sectors.
Last November, the Biden administration banned the sale in the United States of new telecommunications equipment by Chinese groups. huawei Technologies and ZTE due to an “unacceptable risk” to the national security of the United States.
This ban later confirmed the one implemented by his predecessor Donald Trump. Remember that Google has also cut ties with Huawei, precipitating its fall in the smartphone market where it was number 3 in the world.
In France, “anti-Huawei” legislative measures
In Europe, fears against the Chinese firm are not new. In France, in 2019, “anti-Huawei” legislative measures were taken to preserve “the interests of defense and national security”, in particular in the context of the operation of 5G mobile networks.
France has not explicitly prohibited Huawei equipment for the deployment of these networks, but the National Agency in charge of information security (Anssi) has very strongly restricted operating authorizations. Enough to force operators to dismantle thousands of 5G antennas installed by the equipment manufacturer.
At the same time, the equipment maker still plans to open a new 5G factory in France this year…
Previously, the UK and Sweden were the first European countries to explicitly ban Huawei from almost all of the infrastructure needed to run their 5G networks.
