Reese Witherspoon explains why she thinks people watch rom-coms more than arthouse movies

I’m of the opinion that there’s a good reason this pumpkin-filled season is nicknamed Meg Ryan Fall instead of Authors’ Fall, and Reese Witherspoon agrees. As we see both romantic comedies and Oscar nominees come out this fall, Witherspoon offers her thoughts on what she thinks audiences want to see again.

Witherspoon herself had a huge impact on the world of romantic comedies by directing the film launch Revenge of a blonde star in many other romantic comedies with stars like Mark Ruffalo and Chris Pine. During a conversation about his production company with THR explained his interpretation of romantic comedies:

When someone says these things, I say, “Call Ted Sarandos or Scott Stuber or Bob Chapek … whoever runs these studios with a streaming service.” Show me the numbers! I guess people have seen more Nancy Meyers films than just one arthouse film. See an arthouse movie once. I think you’ll see a new measure of engagement, which is “How often do people watch?” Who is the recurring audience? I’ve watched many of my favorite romantic comedies and Nora Ephron movies over and over again. Repeatability is an important factor in terms of library value.

As a fan of both, I can personally admit to having seen when Harry met Sally more times than I’ve seen films by Quinten Tarantino or Christopher Nolan. I also think it’s worth mentioning that, like those two directors mentioned above, filmmakers like Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron is extremely competent and revered. movies like Don’t sleep in Seattle Yes father of the bride, are also considered classics and are deeply loved and reviewed by fans. Witherspoon’s business partner Lauren Neustadter mentioned something similar in the same interview, saying:

There was a really interesting moment that started with this Zoey Deutch movie on Netflix, Set It Up. Reese saw it, loved it, and tweeted something like “Where are all the rom-coms?” The response on Twitter has been very intense. … Romantic comedies are wellness movies and this is a time in the world where people are turning to these streaming platforms for wellness content.

You’re right, Netflix’s romantic comedies are incredibly popular and viewers love them. This summer, for example, films like purple hearts makes fans tweet their emotional responses, and by watching and reviewing the movie, people love that kind of content. There are also romantic comedies like Netflix To all the guys I’ve loved before where they were found list of the best romantic comedies in history.

Obviously, there is an audience for romantic comedies, and Witherspoon has made that point clear. To get your rom-com fix, you can refer to 2022 cinema calendar for future releases or use a netflix subscription go back and see the classics.
