Will Smith’s Mighty Emancipation trailer arrives as the Apple TV + film heads into awards season

The last Oscars have been a pretty crazy night for Will Smith. The actor made headlines for slapping Chris Rock on the Oscars stage, but he also won the Oscar for Best Actor that same night. At next year’s Oscars, Will Smith won’t be there in person, but he may very well be in the spirit for his next film. Emancipationwill be able to apply.

The exact fate of the new film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, hasn’t been clear for months. While the film was supposed to be an award contender, it was never given an official release date, neither for theatrical release nor on Apple TV +, so we weren’t sure if it would actually be released this year or not. . However, we now know Emancipation It will be released in theaters on December 2 and will continue on Apple TV + on December 9. The news came with the first trailer of the film that you can see above.

Emancipation follows the character of Will Smith, a runaway slave, as he attempts to head north to reunite with his family and earn his freedom. It’s a powerful and exciting trailer, no doubt. It sure sounds like the kind of movie we hope to do well for awards season voters.

Given that so many of Will Smith’s other film projects have been suspended from this year’s Oscars events, it’s no surprise that Apple isn’t sure how to best manage them. EmancipationRelease of . Early reports say the film is really good, but one wonders what kind of response it will get from the Academy just because it is a Will Smith film the year after “slap in the face”.

If Will Smith’s performance in Emancipation he’s awesome, and based on this trailer, he could very well be in the running for best actor. Of course, this conversation is getting more difficult now. Naming Smith the year after slapping someone on the show would be a controversial move.

It only gets more controversial if he wins, considering he’s been banned from attending the Oscars for the next decade, so he wouldn’t even be there to accept the award or give a speech. That said, while an appointment in other circumstances might have at least been possible, it now seems nearly impossible.

At the same time, great movies aren’t made in a vacuum and there are dozens of other people who could potentially deserve to be honored at Emancipation among which the director Antoine Fuqua also stands out. The release of the film in December gives Fuqua and everyone else a chance to be recognized for their work, and that change doesn’t slow down due to problems between the Academy and Smith.
