Making comedy in the studio system has to be a negotiating brawl over which lines can be made and which should end up on the editing room floor. I love Chris Angel. I came to see your program. I met him and he is a wonderful person. … So it was a joke that got canceled because we were like, I think we asked him and he said, “You know, maybe not that?” And then as soon as he says it, you say, ‘Yeah, why did we ask him? He was so awful to think of it!
Criss Angel is an extremely popular wizard and a Las Vegas icon. He is generally known as The Mindfreak, and he he almost got his movie back in my day. So including it in a joke because the location of the scene was Las Vegas makes sense. Ángel has been active on stage since 1994, hence the theatrical audience during take it in greek in 2010, he reportedly recognized him and laughed at the joke. Although, as Judd Apatow points out, it is not essential to laugh in this case.
The funny thing is that this joke would have worked for anyone. He was inside Gabe Kaplan. It really didn’t matter.
