Prince Harry lost on penalties to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the opening of the Invictus Games, an international competition for wounded soldiers, in Dusseldorf, western Germany.
The Duke of Sussex confronted Boris Pistorius and two athletes during footage broadcast live on the show. Die Aktuelle Sportstudio on German public television ZDF on Saturday night.
Harry failed to score, despite six attempts, while Boris Pistorius, former sports minister of the German state of Lower Saxony (north), scored twice.
The session took place on the set of the show, a gridded screen with two black circles, on which the players had to aim to win a point, acting as cages.
Elegant defeat
Although he had promised to wear a Germany shirt if he lost the penalty shoot-out, Harry ultimately opted for a Mainz scarf, as no Mannschaft shirt was found at the scene. The Duke of Sussex put on the scarf and smiled as the crowd applauded. Mainz is the former club of current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The broadcast took place after Germany’s resounding 4-1 defeat against Japan. Prince Harry also joked assuring the Defense Secretary that he could “manage the national team.” The Defense Minister responded that he “had enough problems already.”
Boris Pistorius, appointed at the beginning of the year, must manage some hot topics, such as the military aid sent by Berlin to Ukraine or the reinforcement of the German army through a fund of 100 billion euros. Germany eliminated England on penalties in the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996.
