An unreleased song by Queen, performed by Freddie Mercury, has just been presented this Thursday by BBC Radio 2. The song titled face it alone (to face alone), was recorded in 1988 and was to appear on the album The miraclereleased in 1989.
This “lost” piece will appear, along with six other previously unreleased tracks, including four featuring the voice of Freddie Mercury, on a reissue of The miracle.
“We’ve found a little Freddie gem that we forgot about,” drummer Roger Taylor told BBC Radio 2 last June.
“In fact, it is a real discovery. It comes from the sessions of ‘The miracle‘, and I think it will come out in September,” he also said.
For this thirteenth studio album, recorded between London and Switzerland, the group was particularly prolific. If the album contains only 10 tracks, 5 on side A, including the hit I want it all, and 5 on the B-side, Queen recorded around 30 of them. At least that’s what Freddie Mercury said at the time, in an interview with DJ Mike Read.
“A moving play”
The song face it alone it was “more or less hidden in plain sight”, guitarist Brian May explained. “We looked at it a couple of times and said, ‘oh no, we really can’t save this.’ Do this and do that. It’s like putting the pieces back together. But it’s beautiful, it’s moving work.”
Freddie Mercury, who had just learned that he had AIDS, succumbed to the disease three years later. Since his death in November 1991, the group has released several other previously unreleased tracks, marketed in particular on the compilation. Queen foreverin 2014.
The miracle is the penultimate studio album by Queen, before Innuendo in 1991 and Made in heaven in 1995.
The band performed at Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee last June in London, with Adam Lambert singing on stage with them since 2012.
