The issue of sexual violence will be addressed at the Cannes Film Festival, says Camille Cottin. The master of opening and closing ceremonies of this 77th edition, which begins this Tuesday, May 14, explained to AFP that the theme will be present through “speeches by strong and powerful personalities.”
Among them, Judith Godrèche, who became a leading figure in the #MeToo movement in France by filing a complaint for the rape of a minor against the directors. Benoit Jacquot AND Jacques Doillon. He will be present at the festival this Wednesday, May 15, to present a short film, Me tooproduced with a thousand victims of sexual violence who responded to his call.
A festival “very connected to society”
“We are in a moment of deep and structural questioning,” Camille Cottin develops this Tuesday in the columns of Sud Ouest.
“Judith Godrèche paved the way. This topic will not be hidden at all in the festival, on the contrary, it has always been very connected with society, if only because cinema is the mirror of these advances.”
In fact, this 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will find it difficult to avoid the question. If the Mediapart site denied the rumor that it was preparing to reveal a list of personalities accused of sexual violence, Elle magazine published on Monday, May 13 – on the eve of the start of the festival – the testimonies of nine women who accuse the powerful producer Alain Sarde of rape and sexual assault. And this Tuesday, a hundred personalities, including numerous actresses, signed a platform demanding a comprehensive law against sexual violence.
Women in the spotlight
The Cannes jury will be chaired this year by a woman, the filmmaker Greta Gerwig, to whom we owe our success Barbie. She is the first American filmmaker to take on the role and succeeds Swede Ruben Östlund, whose jury awarded the Palme d’Or to Anatomy of a fall. last year. Another female figure of American cinema, actress Meryl Streep, will receive an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony.
“I am moved and very happy to welcome Greta Gerwig and Meryl Streep to this stage,” Camille Cottin told BFMTV.
“They are exceptional actresses and women, deeply inspiring. I love (…) having the opportunity to be with them, to open the curtain to make them feel good on this stage.
