Red tones and butterfly on the shoulder. This Tuesday, May 14, artist Jonathan Yeo presented King Charles III with a portrait commissioned by The Drapers’ Company, a British charity.
This red background painting represents the British sovereign wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was appointed colonel of the regiment in 1975.
“It was a privilege and pleasure to be commissioned by The Drapers’ Company to paint this portrait of His Majesty the King, the first to be revealed since his coronation,” Jonathan Yeo said during a ceremony attended by Charles III in Buckingham. Palace.
A portrait that “transformed”
The artist, who previously painted the portrait of Prince Philip in 2008 and now Queen Consort Camilla in 2014, explained that his work had evolved as the king’s role in public life “transformed”. That’s why he represented a red butterfly on his right shoulder.
“I do my best to capture the life experiences and humanity etched in each sitter’s face, and I hope that’s what I achieved in this portrait,” he added.
Charles III, who has resumed his royal commitments since the announcement of his cancer, revealed the portrait this Tuesday afternoon, all smiles, to applause from the public. The work will then hang in London’s Drapers’ Hall, a prestigious building where receptions are held.
