Hollywood legend Meryl Streep received an honorary Palme d’Or on Tuesday, May 14 during the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, immortalizing her “indelible place in cinema history.”
“You changed the way we see women in the world of cinema (…) you gave us a new image of ourselves,” declared actress Juliette Binoche, unable to hold back her tears before handing Meryl Streep the honorary palm.
“Queen Meryl”, 74, has already collected almost all the distinctions, including a record 21 Oscar nominations and 3 gold statuettes, but she had not been to Cannes for 35 years.
“I’m glad you didn’t get tired of my apple.”
“I’m so happy you haven’t gotten tired of my apple,” the actress said, shifting behind her glasses and dressed in a draped ivory dress.
This Palm rewards the actress’s career, which began in 1977 with “Julia”, followed by “Kramer versus Kramer”, her first Oscar (1979).
