Cannes 2024: Sagazan’s Zaho makes Greta Gerwig cry with a version of David Bowie

The young singer performed the song “Modern Love” during the opening ceremony. A tribute to the president of the jury, who knows the song well.

Musical surprise at the Cannes Film Festival. On Tuesday afternoon, May 14, during the opening ceremony, the French singer Zaho de Sagazan electrified the Festival Palace with a very personal version of modern love by David Bowie. A nod to the American Greta Gerwig, director of Barbie and president of the jury, who did not hide her emotion.

“Dear Greta, you are a gift for the festival. So the festival has a gift for you,” announced Camille Cottin, master of ceremonies, before the lights went out.

It was then that Zaho de Sagazan appeared at the top of the hall’s stairs to begin his performance, with electro accents. After taking them off, he took off his shoes to go up on stage where he performed some dance steps. He then approached the filmmaker to sing the last chorus.

Well chosen song

The 40-year-old director, between laughter and tears throughout the performance, knew the lyrics by heart. Because this title was addressed to him: it is the soundtrack of french has2012 film directed by his partner Noah Baumbach, for which he co-wrote the script and in which he played the lead role.

Zaho de Sagazan has established himself as the musical revelation of the year 2023 with his first album, The Lightning Symphony. She emerged as the big winner at the Victorias de la Musique last February with no less than four trophies.
