“I mortgaged my property”: as Francis Ford Coppola by MegalopolisKevin Costner committed his own funds to Horizon: An American Sagapresented on Sunday, May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival, a western that is available in several ambitious sections.
“No one (in Hollywood) was excited about making these movies. They told me: ‘Let’s make one and see how it goes. Nobody makes even two, Kevin. Why make them – you four?’+,” the actor told AFP -director, who had left his mark with dancing with the wolves in 1990.
“So at one point I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it myself.’ And I mortgaged my property, raised the money. There are no excuses anymore. These are my decisions. If you don’t like it, you can come and complain to me.”
According to the American press, the budget of the film, presented out of competition at Cannes, amounts to 100 million dollars.
35 year project
For Megalopolisa film that seriously divided critics, between testament and failure, Francis Ford Coppola also sold his property worth 120 million dollars.
Costner returned to the “adventure” of his “crazy” project: “I started the script in 1988. It was supposed to be finished in 2003. But, at the last minute, the studio didn’t want it anymore because they were really disappointed. Open range (the western he directed, released the same year, editor’s note) had worked very well.”
“Stranger”
“I’m a bit of an outsider and I don’t know exactly why,” asked the interpreter of J.F.K., 69 years old. “Probably because I don’t want people to manipulate the story I want to tell and I’m willing to stand up and say no.”
Involved in several westerns as an actor and/or director (silver, Wyatt Earp EITHER Open range), the American said he was “very excited to be able to come to Cannes.”
“It may have helped (visibility) to have a place like that in the programming this weekend. I dreamed of coming here and bringing my own film (…) I am very happy that Cannes has maintained its traditions and to have the opportunity to be part of them.
Costner was ultimately committed to portraying Native Americans “correctly” on film, adding that during the conquest of the West, these peoples were unfortunately “simply erased.”
In addition, Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture, presented him with the insignia of Arts and Letters Officer on Sunday in Cannes.
