Rarely has Netflix communicated in such a nebulous way. Last week, the streaming giant announced that its event series The 3 body problem released last March would have the right to “additional episodes”… without talking about season 2, and already mentioning the end of the show. The show’s creators gave a little more precise information to the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, May 21.
David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo, the trio at the helm of the series, assure the American media that their new contract provides for “seasons”, in plural, the magazine insists.
“We knew how many hours (of episodes) we needed to tell the rest of the story, because we have a roadmap that has to take us to the end,” Dan Weiss said. “And we have what we need to get there, just like we planned when we started.”
“We will have enough time”
It took four years for the presentation of the first season, after the acquisition of the rights to the three original novels by Chinese Liu Cixin. “When we finish the series, we will have dedicated seven years to it,” says David Benioff:
“We’ll be able to tell the rest of the story and yes, we’ll have enough time to tell it the way we want. It’s extremely rewarding.”
Last April, the trio confided in Collider that they would need “at least three seasons, maybe four, to tell the full story.”
Ambitious project
The 3 body problem presented its first eight episodes last March. As you remember hollywood reporter, are one of the most expensive shows to produce in Netflix history, with a budget of $20 million per episode. The project was not entrusted by chance to David Benioff and Dan Weiss: the duo is at the origin of the series game of Thronesa global success broadcast on HBO between 2011 and 2019.
The renewal of his new show seemed uncertain due to its lackluster debut, marked by disappointing first-week ratings and mixed reviews. The 3 body problem Then it raised its head by spending three weeks in first place in the ranking of Netflix’s most watched programs and seven weeks in the Top 10 worldwide.
