Filmmaker Sean Baker received the Palme d’Or on Saturday, May 25 for longsa thriller that follows the encounter between a Brooklyn prostitute and the son of a Russian oligarch.
“This film is magnificent, full of humanity (…) It broke our hearts,” declared the president of the jury and director of Barbie Greta Gerwig before presenting him with the award.
“Fight for the cinema”
“We have to make movies so they reach theaters,” said Sean Baker upon receiving his Palme d’Or, the first awarded to an American film since the coronation of Tree of Life by Terrence Malick in 2011.
“I know that I will continue fighting for cinema. We have to fight to make films that are released in theaters. The world must remember that watching a movie on your cell phone or at home is not the way to watch movies,” insisted the 53-year-old American. who also dedicated his film “to all sex workers.”
