A Swedish rapper named hip-hop artist of the year in Sweden last month died in a shootout between gangs in Gothenburg (west), Swedish police announced on Wednesday.
Nicknamed “the masked rapper,” C. Gambino, 26, whose real name is Karar Ramadan, was the victim of a shooting in a parking lot Tuesday night, according to police. “Police have opened a murder investigation. No one has been arrested yet,” he said in a statement.
This murder is “linked to a conflict between gangs” and the rapper was known to the police, a police spokesperson told AFP. Photos from the scene show a series of bullet holes in a glass door in the parking lot.
One million listens a month
C. Gambino released his latest title sister gang (“Last time” in Swedish) on May 31. It has been listened to 700,000 times on Spotify. The rapper records around a million listens a month, according to the platform.
“He was one of the greatest in Swedish hip-hop,” Swedish rap expert Petter Hallen told the TT news agency, adding that his death was “a big blow to the rap scene in Gothenburg and throughout Sweden.” .
“The most tragic thing is that he had recently moved away from the criminal world to dedicate himself more to the expression of feelings and relationships,” he added.
Another famous Swedish rapper, Einar, was shot dead as part of a rivalry between criminal gangs in October 2021.
Sweden has struggled to contain violence from clashes between criminal gangs for several years, facing shootings and explosions every week.
This violence was initially linked to the fight for control of drug trafficking but has spread, among other things, to personal rivalries.
