Unfortunately, Kate found out about Hagan’s sale, but not why she did it. This culminated in a scene where Kate berates Hagan and calls him a coward for abandoning Independence and its people. Mark Sheppard revealed in an interview with Gossipify that he had trouble acting the scene due to gravity, but in the end it was one of his favorite scenes of him that he has ever done:
I looked at the scene and couldn’t read it. I couldn’t read it, I couldn’t repeat it. It was impossible to repeat. I am a father … and what came to my mind, knowing that I am lying about why I left and the betrayal the other feels, was devastating to do. It was, on the contrary, one of my favorite things I’ve ever done, and one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
Although Hagan was unable to tell Kate the circumstances of her departure, Walker: Independence at least she suggested that later she would have the feeling that he was taking care of her. Hagan left her a hat that she was having a hard time wearing at the beginning of the episode, which she later found in her bedroom. Kate wore the hat when she was alone, probably indicating that she still had respect or feelings for Hagan, even after the hateful things she had said.
