“It is difficult to say that he is no longer there”: Paul Belmondo talks about his father, who disappeared a year ago

Jean-Paul Belmondo’s son confides in RTL about the actor’s disappearance, a year ago, and the national tribute paid to him in Les Invalides.

This Tuesday marks the first anniversary of the death of Jean-Paul Belmondo. A year after the actor’s death, at the age of 88, his son Paul trusts life without his father. In an interview with RTL, he talks about his memories, his difficult duel and the discretion he has observed for a year:

“I don’t know if it’s out of modesty, but I don’t want to have a kind of overexploitation of my father’s departure, or that he’s gone. He is still there, his movies are there, they are very successful every time they appear on television and that is the important thing. “

He, however, did not see a single one: “I’m having a hard time. I think it was David Hallyday and Laura Smet who were talking about the (Johnny Hallyday) records that came out later, and that they found it difficult”. listen. Today I understand that it is difficult. Not because I am going to suffer it, but there is a kind of duel and I am fighting. It will probably come later, it will have to happen anyway.”

“Time does its job, but it’s hard”

“I think about him on a daily basis,” adds the 59-year-old racing driver. “There is sadness, lack… do we protect ourselves from that? No. Sure, time does its job, we learn to live, but it’s hard to tell us that he’s gone (…) We related to his family photos, to these things (…) I think he had decided that this was the end , that he had turned the question of his life around, that he wanted to leave calmly and he left calmly.

Three days after the disappearance of Jean-Paul Belmondo, a national tribute was organized at Les Invalides. “We didn’t expect so many people to come,” recalls Paul Belmondo. “We were very touched to see these people lining up for hours just to say goodbye to him.”

It was Jean-Paul Belmondo himself who wanted the music of the Professional during the ceremony, he reveals his son.

“We told ourselves ‘we are not going to play the music of the Professionalreally will too… And then the notary comes and tells me (…) ‘Your father has asked me for the music of the Professional. I hadn’t planned much, but I had planned this.”
