Ten years ago today, the Canon of James Bond movie was above the successful debut of fallen from the sky. The most financially successful 007 entry and celebration of the franchise’s 50th anniversary pitted Daniel Craig’s Bond against perhaps his most formidable nemesis: Javier Bardem’s Raoul Silva. While one of the most iconic encounters between these two MI6 sons was nearly cut from the film, Bardem himself was apparently unaware of this fact.
When I had the opportunity to speak with Javier Bardem earlier this year on behalf of his appearance on the sony movie Crocodile Lyle LyleI couldn’t leave this room without at least one fallen from the sky history. So of course the Seduction scene by Silva / Bond almost omitted from director Sam Mendes’ Extraordinary Bond movie seemed like a good place to start, as that moment drew criticism from executives, but ultimately proved to be a memorable moment of Race 007 by Daniel Craig .
After being questioned about his feelings on the scene and his near-elimination, Bardem was more than happy to share many fond memories of his James Bond experience. Sharing his memories with Gossipify, here’s what Javier Bardem recalled of directing this landmark Bond film:
I didn’t know they tried to take him away, I didn’t know. But I remember the feelings of reading it and talking about it with Sam Mendes, and being very open with him in bringing things into the conversation. [I was] I really had a lot of fun with him imagining this exchange of dialogue, selection and relationship with Mr Bond, and how to try to make him uncomfortable in the sense that he doesn’t know what’s going to happen and then it passes. While we were shooting, it was also a great experience, because Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig and Roger Deakins. I mean, what else do you need? And Barbara Broccoli!
Summing up an overall James Bond experience like this, Javier Bardem clearly had the time of his life to make fallen from the sky. This was also true off-set, because Bardem once shared a joke which he extracted from Daniel Craig during this intense production. So not being aware of the studio’s policy that nearly robbed Raoul Silva of becoming nice and close to 007 isn’t really a trait.
Also known by his real name, Tiago Rodríguez, Silva remains one of the best and best bonding baddies through the opponent’s cannon. Dramatically, he’s a figure who made one of the deepest cuts in James Bond’s armor, and Daniel Craig’s years have seen quite a few contenders for that honor. Comically, Javier Bardem’s evil ex-agent is even more lethal, as he’s not afraid to make a joke about wasting a good scotch soon after killing an innocent bystander.
This “cute” moment between 007 and his former comrade in arms is the perfect crossroads between the two tones. Eventually, some of the Bardem people famous for creating his fallen from the sky such a wonderful experience is what ensured that her moment of seductive prowess remained in the final product.
With Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson resisting the studio note of recording this well crafted moment, it was a win for history. The most successful James Bond film not only managed to push the limits with humor, it also allowed for a moment when a haunting reading of 007’s story was encouraged in the text. Sean Bean’s Alec and Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond got into Goldeneye so Silva and Craig’s Bond could run.
