to exist Yes or many reasons to be excited about the next release of Babylon. Damien Chazelle has been providing great entertainment in recent years with movies like Land Yes Whip, and assembled a truly spectacular cast to bring to life his raucous tale of Hollywood excess during the transition from silent to sound. The trailer for the new film definitely has a chaotic feel to it, with Brad Pitt encouraging Margot Robbie to fight a snake among many other wild moments. An early screening of the 188-minute epic took place in Beverly Hills and early reactions are everywhere.
Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie star in a cast that also includes Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, Jovan Adepo and others in what should be a big nominated for some Oscars 2023 . Let’s see what some early reactions on social media can do. Tell us about it Babylon .
Clayton Davis of Variety calls is a “high-octane cocaine-inducing trip”, praising Justin Hurwitz for the music, as well as Margot Robbie’s performance:
#Babylon makes it look like someone read Damien Chazelle the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and then said, “Wait for my beer!” High-octane cocaine-inducing trip. Excellent first half. Probably the new favorite internet movie of all time. Margot Robbie and Justin Hurwitz are your stars. pic.twitter.com/aM3rru1so0November 15, 2022
Film critic Maggie Ma. also mentions music and says that Li Jun Li, who has already appeared in various TV series, including sex/life, Wu assassins Yes Quantumis a real scene stealer:
#Babylon is definitely a wild ride! But it’s also an interesting and crazy journey to revisit the history of Hollywood and cinema. I love the music and the leading actors. #MargotRobbie really gives it her all. She is sensational. Li Jun Li steals the show every time she appears on screen. pic.twitter.com/xt6TUqE6sVNovember 15, 2022
Jeff Nelson calls the film “bold” and a shock to the senses. This writer says you can feel director Damien Chazelle’s style throughout the three hours:
#Babylon/#BabylonMovie is a daring Hollywood epic that completely shocks the senses. Margot Robbie and Diego Calva give great performances. Damien Chazelle incorporates his signature musicianship and movement throughout. Justin Hurwitz’s score is one big wall of sound. pic.twitter.com/RTlL9WhaKaNovember 15, 2022
Josh Blumenkranz , meanwhile, is impressed with what he calls the director’s best work to date. This love letter to cinema took the cinephile’s breath away:
BABYLON What a movie! A love letter to cinema. Damien Chazelle’s best film! I adore! What wild fun at the cinema! Margot Robbie gives a high octane performance that took my breath away! cheer! #BabylonMovie #babylon #MargotRobbieNovember 15, 2022
Yet it seems that for every tweet in a frenzy Babylon, there is another that makes inroads into this narrative. If some reactions call this film Damien Chazelle’s best, there are others like this as well review by erick weber who have strong opinions that it is not only the director’s worst film, but one of the worst films of the year:
I have some very, very bad news to share with you, #Babylone is a fiery mess, a tonal mess, easily Damien Chazelle’s worst movie and one of the worst movies of 2022 💀November 15, 2022
Matt Donato of Slash Films he says the film’s first hour is gripping, and every actor has his or her moment to shine. However, overall character development is lacking and the end result is a chaotic “bloated mess”:
#Babylon turns forward with a push at the start, first hour (sort of) starts easy, then next two hours flat. Chazelle is shot and shunned by the machine of industry, but her fantastic commentary is terribly missing. Chaotic, opulent and a bloated mess. pic.twitter.com/cX6ceIyPRRNovember 15, 2022
Perri Nemiroff of Collider commends Justin Hurwitz’s score and Margot Robbie’s acting ability, but agrees with previous assessment that Babylon doesn’t support all your key characters:
#Babylon has some incredibly strong sequences, especially those that focus on Margot Robbie’s character, but they generally lacked focus and couldn’t support that many key characters. There are a lot of great ideas, but the manic visuals and story structure work for some and not for others. pic.twitter.com/ZF6SJLeoXcNovember 15, 2022
Definitely, Joshua Rothkopf of Entertainment Weekly says the film has a lot of energy, but that doesn’t feel like a good thing. He said that Babylon he is not insightful and calls it “a film about Scorsese coke by an impeccable director”:
Damien Chazelle brings buckets of energy to BABYLON, but it never fails to be thrilling, obvious, and ultimately short-sighted. Everything is borrowed, even Tobey Maguire stole the movie as Alfred Molina. A film about Scorsese’s coke from a perfectly clean director.November 15, 2022
It is clear that audiences should expect a loud, long and chaotic adventure when Babylon hits theaters in December; however, it’s unclear how successful Damien Chazelle is in realizing his vision.
