Could it be the most expensive brightness sock in history? The accessory that belonged to Michael Jackson was sold for the modest sum of 6,200 euros during the auctions in Nîmes at the GARD, this Wednesday, July 30. Adorned with crystals, this unique piece had been estimated at 4,000 euros.
If the object seems banal at first glance, its history fascinates collectors: the sock was brought to France by the artist during his history World Tour Tour in 1997.
The room of this collector also testifies a particular moment in the Pop legend career, disappeared in 2009, according to the Interenchères site. During his concert granted at the Charles Ehrmann stadium in Nice on June 27, 1997, the accessory would have shone in thousands of lights during the interpretation of Beat it AND Billie JeanTwo emblematic titles of the artist’s repertoire.
This textile relic accompanied the most emblematic choreographic movements of Michael Jackson, starting with the iconic Moonwalk, this backward slide that challenges the laws of gravity and that the artist popularized in 1983.
This piece would never have been found without Mr. Maada. The plateau coach, who later took care of the dismantling of the team, fell on this high sock decorated with bright square crystals, abandoned near the lodges.
A good that maintained in an environment, accompanied by its period “behind the stage”. To authenticate the origin, the seller will provide a certificate of discovery, as well as a time payment sheet, guaranteeing the traceability of this unique piece.
Failure of a first sale
Exit on July 21, the accessory had not found any buyer. The fault of the lack of communication, according to Olivier Vergne, an expert at the Nîmes Sales Hotel, interviewed by France Bleu.
“There was no buyer because our usual audience is not really the public of pop music memories.” According to him, several interested collectors had been expressed since then, justifying this new auction whose initial price was 2,500 euros.
If the sale may seem absurd, it is part of a broader trend to assess objects that belonged to the King of Pop. The previous year, the hat used during the first Moonwalk television in March 1983 had found a buyer for 77,640 euros at the Hotel Drouot in Paris.
