A crowd of many Britons gathered outside Buckingham Palace on Thursday after news of Elizabeth II’s death was announced. The crowd also sang a traditional song to pay tribute to the new monarch, Carlos III.
Outside the gates of the London palace, we hear for the first time someone shouting “God save the king!” (“God save the king!”). This phrase, spoken by Prime Minister Liz Truss during her speech announcing the Queen’s death, will also replace the title of the British national anthem, which was “God save the Queen!” during the reign of Elizabeth II.
Long live the king!
The crowd then resumes in chorus the traditional expression: “Long live the King!” (“Long live the king!”).
Thousands of Britons and tourists came to lay a flower or pay their respects to this head of state who made history. His son, now king, must return to London tomorrow.
