He intends to take “the measure of history linked to this role.” In giving his son William the title of Prince of Wales, King Charles III also designated his wife, Kate, as the new Princess of Wales. A title that hasn’t been used formally… since Diana. And for good reason: Camilla regained the title of Princess of Wales by marrying Charles in 2005, but she never wore it out of respect for Lady Di.
And according to British media citing a real source, Kate is fully aware of what this new task represents:
The new Princess of Wales “takes the step associated with this role, but will naturally want to look to the future by creating her own path,” a royal source told the PA news agency.
A title like no other
Diana had been created Princess of Wales in 1981, she retained that title despite her divorce from Charles in 1996 and even after his death in a car accident in 1997.
Camilla preferred the simple title of Duchess of Cornwall, also showing humility during a period in which she had to face strong unpopularity within the British population.
