Its executive producer Dark Materials is open about adapting the amber scope and adding “extra fun details”

Warning: Slight spoilers ahead for the amber telescope by Philippe Pullmann.

The third and final season of its dark materials is ongoing on HBO, and it’s already clear that the series will stay true to Philip Pullman’s the amber telescope significantly during some changes (like Will’s latest trauma ) of what happened on the page. Readers know the stakes will only rise as the episodes continue to build into what is sure to be an exciting series finale, and executive producer Dan McCulloch spoke to Gossipify about adapting the book to the series and adding of some details.

The first two episodes wasted no time in reviving the story after a nearly two-year hiatus, with some characters in far better positions than others. How Will and Lyra have to deal with the thin knife Torn to pieces, Asriel has assembled an army, and Mrs. Coulter will seemingly go from captor to captive. The plot will only thicken as the final season progresses, so when I spoke to Dan McCulloch about it its dark materialsshared how much they had to track the season to fit the amber telescope:

In terms of the main journey, it’s plotted very closely, despite the book being much larger and having more in the way of world-building and more to understand and more to process. Will and Lyra’s background is pretty clear. One time Will uses the help of angels to locate where Lyra is and save her from Mrs. Coulter, then Lyra insists where she would like to go, and then where they go is pretty clear in the book, and it leads us to this amazing kind of point stop of an ending.

Any adaptation has to make cuts to what it brings to the screen and what just wouldn’t translate well into a storyline, so part of Philip Pullman’s world-building hasn’t become its dark materials. However, the characters are quite defined, which should make the emotional punches of the book very strong when they occur in the series.

we don’t know which Key moments from the book have been adapted. Back for season 3 again! Asriel is already attracting more attention than inside the amber telescopegive James McAvoy some screen time to catch up Asriel standalone episode that needed to be cut of season 2.

Given what McAvoy and Ruth Wilson said about Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s relationship Season 3 is going to be tough for Lyra’s parents. Executive producer Dan McCulloch continued:

So for us, in terms of adaptation, how much can we learn about what Asriel did? Often the book doesn’t go into too much detail, because it just goes on top, building more and more where it goes, and Mrs. Coulter is in and out. We’re obviously starting with Ms. Coulter much earlier in her journey, and we have more to unpack and expand and relax around that, what we’re doing on the show, what we think the audience is going to love because what she’s got to do is put it on her. old armor and enter and be the Mrs. Coulter we knew, to gain information from an old enemy to protect her daughter. So I feel like we mapped out that core in some pretty detailed detail and then we could add some more fun extra details to that.

Early in the series, Mrs. Coulter is more likely to put on her armor to capture Lyra than to help her. In season 3, she will apparently need this armor to protect her daughter. There are surprises in store for readers and non-readers alike, with the promise of “amusing” details that don’t originate in the pages of Philip Pullman. the amber telescope. The past changes have really paid off, especially with the decision to do so include Amir Wilson as Will in the season 1 adaptation from northern Lightsalthough the character does not appear in Pullman’s trilogy until the thin knife.

Only time will tell what new details are introduced to accompany the moments readers will recognize by the amber telescope, but it’s safe to say that the story won’t be any lighter for Lyra and Will. Dan McCulloch also shared that there was always a plan for a long rest between seasons 2 and 3 so that young stars Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson can “grow a little more” for the “darker, darker themes” of this adaptation.

Co-executive producer Jane Tranter also explained why fans should be happy to have two episodes a week on HBO (or via a Maximum HBO subscription ) instead of just one. With the series finale airing Dec. 26, the adaptation of the amber telescope will officially conclude before the end of the year. New episodes debut Mondays starting at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
