SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains key spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, continue at your own risk!
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye takes one emotional punch to the stomach after another. The film opens with the death of King T’Challa, the man she was sworn to protect and keep safe at all costs, and while on duty to protect Princess Shuri on a mission to the Stranger, she is once again devastated when the young royal is kidnapped. . And as if the circumstances weren’t bad enough, she becomes the butt of Queen Ramonda’s wrath and is stripped of her role as commander of the Dora Milaje.
All of this is heavy material for the character arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the product of a close collaboration between Danai Gurira and writer/director Ryan Coogler.
Before theatrical release Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Last month, I had the opportunity to discuss Okoye’s film journey with Gurira at a press day in Los Angeles for the Marvel blockbuster. I asked him about his work with Ryan Coogler in crafting the character journey in the final chapter of his story. Dancing between spoilers, he explained,
There’s been a lot of talk about his arc and how we got him there and the journey he’s on. We knew something pretty dramatic was going to happen to her in this film, and you know, what was it really about, what was underneath? You know, rather its location… because there are so many elements of where the duel takes place and how it affects the different members of this ensemble in different ways. So where exactly does it hit and how does it handle it?
As stated earlier in black Panther and the last two avengers film, Okoye is passionate about her responsibilities in the world of Wakanda, and it’s a devastating blow to her in the new film when Queen Ramonda strips her of her role as Dora Milaje. (It’s one of the most incredible scenes in the film, and is a great collaboration between Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett.)
Continuing, Gurira emphasized his character’s personal need for control, noting that part of his process was to correctly determine the events that would prompt him to do so:
He’s a very controlled person and he likes it that way. Obviously, he handles the protection of the nation. So it’s really figuring out how that translates into what she ends up doing, because she’s an actress, to feel like I’m in control. But does she take care of herself?
Those who have seen the film know that Okoye is no slouch after losing his spot on the charts. Although it is not clear what the exact status of him with the Dora Milaje at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forevershe is impressively suited for a super-powered role in the blockbuster’s third act battle, donning the Midnight Angel armor from the comic.
And it wasn’t just in broad strokes. Danai Gurira noted that she worked closely with Ryan Coogler on every line of dialogue. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – taking full control of his franchise role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. she added,
All of these things were talked about a lot all the time, and just the little bits of what he would say, what he wouldn’t say, all those little things about what comes out of his mouth were always something that we explored a lot, a lot, a lot. , very carefully. .
