Compared to other professions, it is very rare to hear of an established actor retiring from the entertainment industry. But long before Bruce Willis’ retirement was announced following his diagnosis of aphasia, Empire star Terrence Howard has announced his retirement plans after the end of Empire. Luckily, the actor decided to pursue other projects after the series ended in 2020. Viewers were shocked when it was announced that he would be returning for the limited series. Unlike his earlier retirement statement, this time the Oscar-nominated actor was more serious about retiring from entertainment when he spoke to Eastern Time at the red carpet premiere of the miniseries Peacock.

I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve now given the best of what I have as an actor. Now, I like to see other new talent appear and I don’t want to pretend to be me.
The Lucious Lyon actor wanted out on his own terms before Hollywood pushed him around. Howard has played a variety of roles across multiple genres, including The Jacksons: An American to dream Yes electric dreams. The parody angle isn’t too long, as some well-known actors basically played themselves in the twilight years of their careers. Pretending to play for a living can also get boring after a while, as roles become less frequent and rely more on a person’s given personality, rather than their ability to fully transform into someone else.
While Howard is on his last stage call, that doesn’t mean he’s stopped being an acting watcher. The 53-year-old said he is looking forward to up-and-coming actors shining in Hollywood.
Yes, there are better actors out there who can do things that I could never do. So, I want to applaud them, I want to be excited about what they’re doing.
It’s good that Howard stands up for young actors even if he no longer plans to act. Despite her decision to retire again, audiences won’t be left with anything after the limited series ends. He has several projects underway.
