Disney’s new animated movie Avalonia, the strange journey, will be released just in time for Christmas. This homage to the adventure movies of yesteryear, directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen (Raya and the last dragon), will be available on the Disney+ platform starting December 23.

The film follows three generations of the same family “whose differences could derail their last and by far their most important mission,” warns the official synopsis from Disney, which wants to keep certain plot elements secret until the release of ‘ Avalonia’.
Disney’s first openly gay hero
“avalonia it is a nod to ‘Pulps’, those collections of popular comics printed on cheap paper that flourished on newsstands in the first half of the 20th century”, explains Don Hall in a press release evoking his inspirations for this new journey.
“I loved reading old issues of ‘Pulps’ growing up. There were great adventures where a group of explorers could discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They were a great source of inspiration for avalonia.”
avalonia, launched last month in the United States, has also been praised for its efforts to represent diversity. The hero, Ethan, is a young gay teenager, Disney’s first openly LGBT hero.
