In a recent interview, The Riddler actor Paul Dano said that the song was not only a smart choice by the Caravan editors, but was instrumental in shaping his take on his character.

I think it’s about both sides of the trauma and one person, you know, had a little bit more resources to deal with the trauma than he did: Bruce Wayne. And my boyfriend just didn’t have, you know, he didn’t have the culture, but he probably didn’t even have the nature if we’re real.
I agree with Dano. If we’re being honest, the actor’s version of Edward Nashton is a serial killer who thinks he’d be more at home in a David Fincher movie than a comic book. This comparison has some merit because the film’s director, Matt Reeves, has said in the past that his characters are darker The Riddler’s real-life inspiration he was, in fact, the Zodiac Killer. Something tells me that even Bruce Wayne’s level of resources may not have helped this traumatized orphan get over his issues.
