Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are living legends, whose on-screen collaboration dates back to the 1980 classic from nine to fivemyself (that would have had a sequel years ago ) . The dynamic duo starred in one of Netflix’s most successful comedies. grace and frankie, which ended recently after seven seasons. But Tomlin and Fonda have some movie projects on the way, including the new dark comedy. Forwardwhich is the perfect elixir for those who are lacking grace and frankie (opens in a new tab).
While their Netflix series may be over, it’s clear that Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have no plans to end their working relationship. I had the pleasure of attending the preview screening of his new film. Forward in the Toronto International Film Festival , where the two were able to shine in comic and dramatic sequences. And there is definitely a touch of Grace and Frankie in the relationship between their characters.
Forward is directed and written by Paul Weitz (American foot, about a guy), and follows two old friends, Claire (Fonda) and Evvie (Tomlin), who reunite for their friend Joyce’s funeral. But instead of these two women crying and connecting, Jane Fonda’s character has other plans, telling Joyce’s widowed husband (Malcolm McDowell) that she’ll kill him before the weekend is over. This joke brought the theater into its first big moment of laughter and set the slightly whimsical tone for this new film perfectly.
Long ForwardAt runtime, let’s see how Jane Fonda (who recently revealed his diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma ) and Lily Tomlin’s characters devise indirect ways to kill their target, with hilarious results. And in this quest, the two can speak honestly about their history, including the dark secrets of their past. And while they constantly make people laugh.
But despite the flirtatious plot for the murder of Forward, the film is also full of really emotional moments and incredible performances (lol) of the actors. Several serious social issues are dealt with during the trial, with Claire and Evvie complaining about how the “different world” they grew up in eventually stifled their passions. Topics such as homosexuality, sexual violence, race and gender identity are addressed with care and emotion.
Although Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda don’t play the same characters grace and frankie, there’s a similarity in how its characters interact with each other, which might appeal to longtime Netflix sitcom fans. Evvie di Tomlin is once again the most playful and irreverent of the duo, while Claire di Fonda is more tense. But their stories are completely different, especially when it comes to the film’s more emotional and dramatic sequences. And luckily for the fans, they have another movie together titled 80 for Brady.
Forward it currently does not have an extensive theatrical release date. In the meantime, take a look at the 2022 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
