The Real Reason Chris Redd Quit Saturday Night Live

Chris Redd made a name for himself in the comedy world over his five seasons Saturday night live. He became famous for impersonating Kanye West (although he does not consider himself an impressionist ), and even won an Emmy for one of his many musicals. In other words, until recently, she followed in the footsteps of co-stars such as Kate McKinnon walk away from the show. These days, he’s venturing out on his own, having recently released his HBO Max stand-up special himself. Because I’m this way. Getting all that stage time for himself is a far cry from the famous sketch comedy show, and that’s exactly what the man wants, because it turns out he was just tired of being a little cog in a big machine. Not only that, but the stress of the show took a toll on his mental health.

When we talk about the constant stress of being cut off from a sl skit against being the star of his own special, Chris Redd spoke about the following:

I was afraid my time would be cut short for six years. It turns out that when you do a special, even if I cut an hour of my jokes, I’m the only one speaking for an hour. And I like that shit, you know? I mean, I thought, I want to spend the next five years doing this, just creating, just creating things for myself. And, you know, I think wrestling 5-6 minutes a week didn’t drive me the same way anymore.

Working so hard every week just to get five or six minutes of total time on the show has to be a struggle, and Redd seems to appreciate that he’s exploring creative outlets that give him more freedom. However, it wasn’t just that since the stress of a program advertised as sl it was starting to get to him, and for such limited screen time, the sacrifice didn’t outweigh the benefits. She went on to say this:

You know, I speak for myself, as SNL, I’ve always had anxiety, I’ve always had the things I have and I’ve always dealt with it my way, but this job has taken all my stuff and I’ve just achieved it, I pushed it to a level where it was kind of unmanageable for me.

Chris Redd’s mental health is a common theme Because I am?, and even if he never actually mentions sl by name, it’s not surprising to hear that such work has exacerbated these struggles. Not everything was easy in man’s life either, as it was recently involved in a terrifying attack, although fortunately the underwent surgery and recovers. Although the transition from sl this is a big change, redd seems to have a positive attitude and is making the most of it, so maybe Lorne Michaels was right when he said it was a good thing. .

you can see Because I am? on HBO Max (opens in a new tab) now! Not only is it hilarious, but it’s a cathartic look into a comedian’s mental health. If you don’t already have one Maximum HBO subscription correct it now to see this special.
