Scream Creator Explains How Neve Campbell Drives Sidney’s Story in Third Movie (And Now I’m Even Sadder She’s Going)

The horror genre has thrived for years, as fans enjoy a resurgence of exciting new projects. Some best horror movies has returned to theaters in recent years with highly anticipated sequels including Scream. and franchises creator/writer Kevin Williamson recently discussed how Neve Campbell helped drive Sidney’s story in the third film. Although now I’m even sadder that he’s gone and will not be in the next cry VI .

generations of Scream Fans were disappointed when it was revealed that the upcoming sixth film would be the first without franchise hero Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott thanks to a pay dispute. Franchise creator Kevin Williamson is executive producing the new Radio Silence films and recently opened up to collider about the process behind scream 3. And it turns out it was Campbell’s idea to have Sidney do his crisis counseling over the phone. As he shared:

I feel Sydney connects with a lot of people and I think Laurie Strode connects. You connect with Laurie Strode, anyone who has survived this kind of trauma. I think Neve was very clever in saying, “Why not put her as a victim’s rights advocate in the sequel?”

How cool is that? Neve Campbell has always delivered super emotional and nuanced performances as Sidney Prescott, but it’s fun to hear how she’s contributed to her behind-the-scenes story. Campbell obviously knows her distinctive character well, which is why many of us will miss her when cry VI will hit theaters in the spring.

Kevin Williamson’s comments to Collider are sure to inspire strong feelings in hardcore. Scream fans, who are still struggling to imagine any part of the film without the franchise’s hero. While Neve Campbell had limited screen time in the last film, she was a welcome presence who proved to be a badass during Stu Macher’s final battle.

Later in that same interview, Kevin Williamson explained why Neve Campbell thought it was important for Sidney to stand up for others in scream 3. While this film showed the character more isolated, he still tried to help people in his own way. As Williamson explained:

It was her idea to do all of this, and I think she was very smart about it, and I like the idea that Sidney has spent her life standing up for other survivors of trauma and abuse. So now, how can you not worry about someone spending their life doing this? I think you have to worry about it: emotion, emotion.

Ultimately, we won’t see Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott you cry VI, despite rumors of a new deal being done. But fans are hoping that could change in future sequels; it certainly seems like Paramount is fully invested in Wes Craven’s beloved slasher property.

New Scream the movie goes from Woodsboro to New York and focusing on the two surviving sets of brothers from the final sequel. While Campbell will not be present, Courteney Cox will reappear as Gale Weathers. And the fans are excited about it too Hayden Panettiere will be back as Kirby Reed, reprising his role for the first time since scream 4.

cry VI The theatrical release is currently scheduled for March 10th. In the meantime, check out the Movie release dates 2023 to plan New Year’s theater outings.
