Quantum Leap’s mid-season premiere has seemingly revealed a traitor to the show, but who could it be?

Attention! The following contains spoilers for the breakthrough Season 1 episode “Fellow Travellers”. Read at your own risk!

the breakthrough The team eventually tracked down Janice Calavicci, but her capture presented more questions than answers. Jenn was able to find Ben’s accomplice in Belize, and while Janice wasn’t much help answering her questions, she did say something to Jenn that got her (and probably some viewers) thinking. Janice suggested that Ben approach her because he didn’t trust anyone on the team, but who could it be from her?

I won’t pretend to know what breakthrough plans or even if Janice is telling the truth. That said, I have a few ideas that might encourage fans to think twice about their favorite characters and maybe even rewatch previous episodes with a Peacock Premium membership. We dig and talk about the characters who may be sabotaging the show.

Magic at Quantum Leap on NBC

Herbert “Magic” Williams

Magic seems like the perfect candidate to sabotage the Quantum Leap program or even use it to further its own agenda. As for what the agenda might be, let’s remember who visited our mysterious knight in the current timeline. Assuming Richard Martinez was secretly working for Magic for some dastardly act, he would certainly appear ignorant and distant when Magic and Jenn visited him. That said, it seems strange that the series leader is sabotaging the same initiative, so maybe Magic isn’t behind him.

Ian in Quantum Leap on NBC

Ian Wright

Ian is arguably the healthiest, friendliest and possibly even the smartest of the Quantum Leap group. As Ziggy’s lead architect, Ian could probably sabotage things the team wouldn’t understand and couldn’t stop. Anyone else remember Ian complaining that Ben rewrote all of Ziggy’s code before he popped out and lost his memory? It’s possible that Ben did it to achieve his goal of saving Addison as currently speculated, or perhaps because he didn’t trust Ian.

Nanrisa Lee in Quantum Leap on NBC

Jen Chou

Could Quantum Leap’s head of security be the traitor Ben didn’t trust? It seems unlikely, given his surprise at the news of a traitor, even if he could have faked that surprise. It’s entirely possible that even though Ben hinted to Janice that there was someone on the team he didn’t trust, he didn’t tell her who. I’m not sure why Jenn would want to sabotage the show, but we’re looking at all options here!

Addison in Quantum Leap on NBC

Addison Augustine

Ben went back in time to “rescue Addison,” but he also did all of this without saying anything to Addison before jumping. Even though Ben still can’t fully remember all the reasons why he jumped, there’s something strange about keeping his fiancée in the dark about an apparent threat to her life. Is it possible that Ben’s attempt to save Addison ultimately prevents him from betraying the Quantum Leap project? It would be the twistiest twist, and I don’t rule it out!

Ben in Quantum Leap on NBC

nice song

The only other suspect to consider is Ben Song, and it’s certainly hard to believe the NBC series would cast its lead man as the villain. Unless, of course, Scott Bakula returns as Sam and runs things in Season 2, and that’s Ben’s whole evil origin story, but that doesn’t appear to be true. That said, it’s hard to say for sure who the traitor might be, and I can’t wait to find out in the coming weeks!

breakthrough airs Mondays on NBC at 10 p.m. ET. Season 2 is already confirmed, so anyone on the fence should catch up and enjoy one of my favorite shows from the fall TV season.
