Shania Twain reveals to Hoda Kotb why she went to ‘The Full Monty’ and posed nude at 57

Shania Twain has spent her career pushing the boundaries of country music, both musically and visually. It would be an understatement to say that she made waves in the genre with her bare belly. While she is a pioneer in this regard, her goal has never been to make her body a focal point. However, the country music legend made headlines last year with the first semi-nude promotional photoshoot of her career. More recently, “Man! I feel like a woman,” revealed the singer TodayHoda Kotb explains why she posed nude at 57.

Shania Twain got her fans talking when she released her topless cover of the single “Waking Up Dreaming.” Instagram account. See for yourself:

After the cover caused a stir, the country music superstar opened up about embracing her 50s body while appearing on BNC Today. Hoda Kotb got to work, asking Twain why he became “The Full Monty” at age 57. And according to the interpreter, the decision was born from the desire to face the fears of him after a life full of physical insecurities:

I did a whole shoot as part of the album cover where I’m completely naked. And it was really scary. But it was kind of like, you know, I really don’t like looking at my body under lights or looking in the mirror. So I said, ‘Look, I’m going to face this fear. I go to this photo shoot. I will leave fashion aside. We use fashion to flatter our shapes, perhaps to hide the things we don’t like to make us look more like we would like to see ourselves without our clothes on. Fashion-wise, that’s me.

It’s honestly surprising to hear her talk about feeling uncomfortable with her body, given her fiery public persona. But of course anyone can suffer from insecurities, no matter how famous or successful they are. At this point in her life, she seems to be no longer willing to let her fear dictate her personal decisions. And I’m sure fans, who have been recreating her iconic look from music videos like “That Doesn’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” for years now, totally agree.

Later in the vulnerable chat, Hoda Kotb asked the Grammy winner “how she felt in that moment” as she posed topless for the first time in her decade-long career. Despite her body’s insecurities, Shania Twain said she found it “empowering” and continued to divulge what was on her mind at the time:

It was so inspiring. I’m so glad I did. I was petrified. But once I flipped the switch and dived into it, I said, “I’m all in.” I am 100% committed. And I didn’t think what other people thought. I didn’t think about who was in the room. It’s about me. This is the time for me to really hold back in the vulnerable moments. I must have been vulnerable. Where I felt like I was faced with the fear of being a judge, or maybe even being made fun of, being embarrassed.

The cheerleader’s decision to overcome this lifelong fear is definitely a defining moment for her and only adds to what was already an eventful 2002 for her. From Ryan Reynolds’ name check at the People’s Choice Awards to playing Mrs. Potts at Disney The beauty and the Beast Celebrating the 30th anniversary (viewable via a Disney+ subscription), the star was quite busy. She even created her own acclaimed documentary Shania Twain: Not just any girl (which is currently available through a Netflix subscription). I look forward to the work she releases in the future and hope she continues to feel good about herself as well.

Shania Twain’s musical comeback continues with her first album in six years, queen of me, which arrives Feb. 3, with its bare album cover. He will follow the album release with a massive concert tour later this year.
