Big spoilers for episode 2 of Mayor of Kingtown Second season coming.
If there’s anything I’ve learned by watching Mayor of Kingtown is that no matter how intense the stories are, they can and almost always will become more extreme. This is especially true of Taylor Handley’s character, Kyle McLusky, who is just trying to hold down a normal, not-so-dangerous day job. However, by the end of the second episode, his new job with the Michigan State Police proved to be just as deadly as his last job in Kingstown. In the upcoming season, Kyle will likely be affected by his actions at the end of the final episode, and Handley is here to break his character’s breaking point.
For some context, during season 1 of kingtown, Kyle was a detective in town. However, his family wanted him to leave and take a different, more secure job. After the destructive prison riot in the finale, he left and joined the state police. However, even this job proved extremely dangerous, especially after his partner was shot after he stopped a car and Kyle shot the two adults in the vehicle. Speaking with 24 News Bulletin, Handley explained what his character went through in the first two episodes, saying:
But this is the worst situation Kyle could be in right now. You saw the end of Prison Riot, Season 2 picks up three or four weeks after Prison Riot. Working for the Michigan State Police, Kyle takes out the can of maple syrup and it arrives hot…
Handley actually posted some behind-the-scenes footage of himself instagram from the maple syrup bottle, and you can see how tense his temper is at the time. While it turned out they were actually just syrup smugglers, the character of him was still edgy, especially after the riots. Handley continued his breakdown, saying:
He’s on red alert, just on a cellular level, he’s on red alert because he hasn’t completely undone what just happened to him weeks ago, which was a very traumatic event. And then in episode two, he’s in a situation where he has to unload his gun, his partner gets shot, he has to shoot the attackers, and then there’s a kid in the car. I mean, it’s, it’s a knockout for this guy. Yet he doesn’t stop.
Clearly, there’s a lot of trauma for Kyle to undo, as things only get worse for him. However, Handley explained that he doesn’t think his character is capable of dealing with his past:
If Kyle stops and starts unpacking all that trauma, he could physically implode. That’s a lot, and when you have so much hanging over your head, and all you do is procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate to let some of it out, it will all come quickly. So the last thing Kyle wants to do is review all of this. So the way he can do that is to stay busy and stay busy.
As good as Aiden Gillen’s Big Bad begins to have a greater impact on the series and Kyle’s brother, played by Jeremy Renner, tries to make peace with the prisoners, Kyle will deal with the aftermath of shooting these two people who had a baby in the car. .
In addition to Kyle’s intense storyline, show co-creator Hugh Dillon explained that he and Taylor Sheridan are start thinking about season three of the show, awaiting renewal, and Jeremy Renner is recovering from a snowplow accident as new episodes of season 2 aired. While Renner heals after breaking dozens of bones it seems that the creatives behind the show will create even more complex stories for the characters of kingtownincluding Kyle.
