One of the most shocking American series in recent years is about to return. It is this week that The Handmaid’s Tale (the scarlet maidenen VF) returns to our screens with its fifth season, more than a year after a fourth barrage that ended in suspense.
Launched in 2017, this Bruce Miller series adapted from a novel by Margaret Atwood imagines a near future in which women, with a few exceptions, have lost their reproductive capabilities. The United States, converted into a religious and patriarchal dictatorship called Gilead, reduced fertile women to slavery. Dressed in long red robes, the latter now hold the title of servants and find themselves enslaved by wealthy bourgeois couples. They confiscate all their rights and repeatedly violate them to obtain heirs to them. But June (Elisabeth Moss), a servant estranged from her mate and her daughter when the country changed, persists in the shadows.

The fourth season saw June escape to flee to Canada. There she found Luke, her mate, and Nichole, the daughter she had in Gilead. But she struggles to adjust to her new life and put her abuse behind her, so her loved ones won’t recognize her and worry about the anger that drives her.
Serena and Fred Waterford, her former torturers, are also in Canada, held by the country’s authorities. Fred successfully negotiated his immunity from revealing information about the Gilead operation and must return there. But as he goes there, June and other survivors ambush and brutally slaughter him. The latest footage shows June, covered in blood, returning home to hug her daughter. Seeing her, Luke understands what happened. “Give me five minutes with the baby and I’ll go,” he told her, without anyone knowing where she intended to go.
• What awaits us
One of the main themes of The Handmaid’s Tale remains unresolved: Hannah, June and Luke’s daughter who was taken from them years ago, is still in Gilead. According to a synopsis released by OCS, the couple and their friend Moïra will continue to fight against this totalitarian system in Toronto while trying to get the girl back. Serena, miraculously pregnant by Fred during the previous season, will continue her revenge against June. Across the border, Gilead’s governing bodies will try to get June out of harm’s way permanently. The moral questions of the latter, who does not feel remorse since Fred’s murder, will be at the center of the plot.
This fifth season also marks the beginning of the end, and fans will soon learn the outcome of the June fight: a few days ago, the American broadcaster Hulu announced that The Handmaid’s Tale had been renewed for a sixth and final season, whose premiere date has not yet been revealed.
