Almost a year after Will Smith famously slapped Chris Rock in the face, Serena Williams is breaking the silence. The tennis champion, who participated in the manufacture of The Williams Methodfor which Will Smith received the Best Actor Oscar, agreed to comment on the incident on the set of CBS Mornings.
Serena Williams initially laments that the incident “overshadowed the amazing Questlove movie”, summer of the soul, which received the Oscar for Best Documentary. And the athlete to add: “I have already been in situations where I was under a lot of pressure and made many mistakes.”
“I’m the type of person who has made mistakes before,” he insists. “It’s not the end of the world. We are all imperfect and human. Let’s be good to each other. It’s something we often forget.”
Serena Williams was at the Oscars with her sister Venus Williams when Will Smith came onstage to slap Chris Rock, who had mocked his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. Serena Williams spoke briefly about the incident on Instagram in March 2022, before deleting the video.
Ceremonial ban for 10 years
The former “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” publicly apologized shortly after the incident. In July, He also posted a video on social media, proposing a meeting with the comedian. The latter mentioned the event in his stand-up, but not yet in an interview.
Will Smith, for his part, resigned from the Academy for the Oscars. This banned him for 10 years from ceremonies, but nothing prevents him from being nominated for the competition. His Best Actor Oscar was not taken from him despite the scandal.
