After winning her well-deserved Emmy for Best Supporting Actress, Abbott Elementary SchoolSheryl Lee Ralph savors his victory. Along with her historic victory, Ralph also won the evening with her powerful acceptance speech. Viewers loved seeing her play teacher Barbara Howard, and it’s clear she’s doing a great job. But it looks like the winner first set her sights on another faculty member.
Before taking gold as Mrs. Howard, the sitcom veteran read Quinta Brunson’s pilot script and wanted to play inept and intelligent director Ava Coleman. That role ultimately went to co-star Janelle James, who landed her first Emmy nomination in the same category for which Sheryl Lee Ralph was nominated this year. While Ralph was campaigning to play the Abbott Elementary School Brunson viewed the Hollywood icon as the no-nonsense kindergarten teacher. With that, Ralph revealed to Variety how the creator of the series persuaded her to play Barbara:
It was just below [saying,] ‘Oh fuck no!’ She said: ‘We need a queen for Barbara Howard. And you are that queen! And I was like, ‘Baby, if you say it like that, how can you say no? What else should I know about this? I will be queen Amo. Yes, I’m ready.’
All Quinta Brunson had to do was get the stage and TV veteran to play Mrs. Howard. Anyone who is a fan of Sheryl Lee Ralph knows that she is a graceful and majestic artist with an outgoing personality. So, at first glance, Ava seemed to be more suited to her outgoing nature. But I think it’s safe to say that Brunson made the right choice in choosing her for Barbara. In all fairness, the role is a natural extension of another character Ralph has already played, that of beloved director and stepmother Dee Mitchell, from the classic sitcom. Moesha.
Despite her initial apprehension, the Tony nominee said playing Janine’s mother was “an incredible gift”. She then explained to Variety how she channels Mrs. Howard in each episode:
I was like, ‘OK, I’m a very experienced actress, I can do stuff.’ is the strangest, [but] it was the absolutely perfect address. I really try to keep this in mind every time Barbara comes to life. Put it down. Put it back. And so many teachers, oh my God, the way they reacted to the character. They say they feel seen. They feel respected.
Having real teachers praising her performance on the hit sitcom is a testament to Sheryl Lee Ralph’s cerebral nature. And as a result of her efforts, Ms. Howard has become a symbol of everyday teachers along with the rest Abbott Elementary Schoolcharacters from. (The comedy series has already paid for it, as Quinta Brunson used the marketing money to help real teachers.)
It’s great to see the star’s on-screen work pay off with an Emmy Award. She now she can put her prize of hers at her bedside as she shared when she was asked where she would put the Emmy before her victory. Her victory was also a justification for her being told that she shouldn’t have kissed Tom Cruise in a movie and for being fired by a TV pilot for not being black enough. We adore a queen and look forward to receiving more awards in her future for abbot and then.
