Chicago Mediterranean has undergone many cast changes in recent seasons, perhaps the most notable being the return of Jessy Schram as Dr. Hannah Asher after leaving at the start of season 6 . Her return marked the beginning of an emergency program that boosts women’s health care in obstetrics and gynecology while maintaining her hard-earned sobriety. The actress spoke to Gossipify about acting Medicinalshe’s OBGYN, and why it’s special to her.
Hannah had to work hard to convince some of her colleagues at the hospital who didn’t welcome her with open arms (namely Steven Weber’s Dean Archer ), AND has proven itself time and time again . When I spoke to Jessy Schram about playing this character who is passionate about her work in women’s health, he shared what it meant to her to bring Hannah to prime time:
It was very special. It was special to me because obviously as someone who sees these doctors and lives life as a woman, I can relate to a lot of stories that I don’t even understand most of the time, and that means a lot. . Whenever I get a question like this it’s always a little overwhelming because I feel like she’s a character that I can relate to in so many different ways, and what’s been really amazing is that literally this weekend three different people approached me and they told me how much they relate to his story.
While Jessy Schram isn’t a doctor, she can relate to her character on NBC’s hit medical drama, and she’s not alone. Clearly, the actress has heard from fans that they too can relate to Hannah, for several reasons. The actress went on to share some of the reasons why Medicinal Viewers found themselves relating to Hannah:
If they knew someone with an addiction or if they’re going through an addiction themselves, or if they went through a scenario when they gave birth or it was their doctor’s story or that’s what they’ve had to overcome. I feel like Hannah is an OB/GYN – when there are OB/GYNs, they have so much more to prove in the field and workforce, and they bring life into this world. They are such powerful characters within the hospital, and to be able to play someone like that is a huge undertaking and I feel very lucky to be able to relate and connect with her in a way that people feel connected to her.
Hannah had to advocate for herself, her fellow recovering addicts, and women in need of obstetrics and gynecological care more than ever in season 8 with the arrival of Jack Dayton and his statistics-based approach to patient care. . She has he rebelled against his system and even he shouted at her in the middle of a meeting of the suffering of its patients when the hospital does not invest in an essential service for new mothers.
Hannah even stood up to Archer despite their growing friendship …and despite the fact that he hadn’t really done what she thought. Their relationship continues after that their unexpected confrontation and seems destined to deepen with the “affective triangle” started by the arrival of the son . ED’s OBGYN had a lot to balance in season 8, but patients remain her top priority. Jessy Schram shared her feelings after receiving comments from fans about Hannah’s identity:
It’s always a big surprise, first of all, when someone walks in and says hello. [laughs] When they tell me they love the show, but also because Hannah means so much to them. She is extremely humble and I feel extremely grateful, to be honest. I feel so grateful to be able to be a part of their lives, but also to hear this information and take it in and remember that when we’re on tour every week and people are watching and the show goes on, it’s not just numbers. People really feel a connection through this and I feel very lucky to be able to play. [this] character.
