Sex/Life creator explains why Netflix and star Sarah Shahi are so essential to the show’s success

The summer of 2021 was special for Netflix subscribers who likes to see spicy stories about love. It was at the end of June of that year that we were treated with the savagery of sex/life Season 1 and everything in between shock of its cliffhanger ending . The show quickly caught on and had viewers talking for weeks, to the point where people were dying to know not only when the drama would return, but Who would protagonist Billie end up with? for the season 2 finale. Now that the series is back and hitting fans once again, we know why the creator thinks Netflix star Sarah Shahi is so central to its success.

What did the Sex/Life creator say about Netflix’s importance to the show?

Everyone knows by now that almost all genres of TV shows/movies that you want to watch can be found on the forerunner of streaming services. is the home of binge channel of hard-hitting and established crime dramas like breaking Bad AND great new favorites like Wednesday even dating shows like Love is blindAnd everything else in between. sex/life creator Stacy Rukeyser recently spoke to Gossipify’s Laura Hurley at SCAD TV Festival in Atlanta, and explained why Netflix was important to the series, saying:

Well, we couldn’t have that much sex and nudity on a network television. [laughs], since we’re on Netflix. What was really exciting is that they were really trying to do something in this space, and they were very excited to do it from an empowered female perspective and to really see female desire through a female gaze. It’s not something every network wants to do, let alone let me show you what you can show. To be truly interested in this unique female point of view is really exciting.

Fans of the series (based on the book by BB Easton, 44 chapters on 4 men), they know full well that at least 40% of what we see Billie, Sasha, Cooper and Brad do wouldn’t be allowed if it were, say, on ABC. The series is very sexually explicit and features a lot of nudity not to mention including some types of sexy moments that are far more adventurous than what you might see on premium cable.

Plus, most of us TV fans also realize that it’s still rare for a show to focus on a female lead, especially one as screwed up as Billie. The entire premise of season 1 centered around his trying to figure out what she wanted after realizing how bored she was with her married life in quiet Connecticut, and her world’s main focus became…to be a mother for her grandchildren. She makes a lot of mistakes (which she continued In sex/life Season 2 ) and may have angered some viewers with her choices, but no one can say she hasn’t fully embraced her journey.

What did the creator of Sex/Life say about Sarah Shahi’s importance to the show?

Speaking of Billie, it’s hard not to mention star Sarah Shahi, who brings the character to life. Rukeyser also praised what she brought to the table, noting:

Sarah Shahi is such a huge part of Sex/Life, and without her, I don’t know if it would have been as successful as it was… She wasn’t happy with her first audition, so she appealed to herself. the casting director and asked to come back and he came back and filmed, I think a couple more times. So she really fought for it, and that’s because she said the story about her spoke to her on a very personal level and was incredibly meaningful to her as a wife, a mother, and just as a woman. I was lucky that a lot of people in our cast did that, who said they got it, they felt it, they understood it and it really meant something to them. He was really emotional; that he works with such busy people. It’s not like a job.

It’s really nice to know that so many people involved with the show are totally on board with trying to showcase women’s opinions on screen more often, and I think a lot of fans would agree that it carries over into the series. . .
