Magnum PI’s Amy Hill shares her take on whether Kumu is the ‘voice of reason’ for Magnum and ‘The Boys’

Magnum IP made its triumphant return to prime time at the 2023 TV premiere schedule thanks to NBC, less than a year after the show aired canceled at the end of season 4 by CBS . After saving the hit show, NBC brought back the entire main cast and they picked up where they left off. That includes Kumu as what actress Amy Hill describes as “the voice of reason” to the characters… especially the males.

Amy Hill, who also spoke feeling more connected to fans after NBC’s revamp – has been playing Kumu since season one. When she spoke to Gossipify about Season 5, I noticed her character had hosted the show and commented:

Absolutely! I think in many ways I am the solid, the voice of reason. [laughs] I love you all, but especially the kids who can go off on a tangent. They get distracted very easily. So even though they’re really smart and talented, and if they’re focused, they can solve cases and they can do a lot of things, but deep down they’re still like kids. So there’s a part of me that also feels like the mother of the house. I take care of everyone.

I think it’s fair to say that sometimes the boys of Magnum IP I definitely need some sort of stay at home mom! At the very least, I’d say that sometimes applies to Magnum (Jay Hernandez), Rick (Zachary Knighton), and TC (Stephen Hill). Gordon (Tim Kang) isn’t necessarily as easily distracted as the other three! While Kumu isn’t the person most likely to end up in a shootout, hostage situation, or car chase, he’s pretty essential to those who do.

And that says a lot for someone whose job description is “cultural curator” in the opening narrative! Amy Hill explained that Kumu runs tours of Robin Masters’ estate, including trying to “make sure everything is accurate in terms of representation.” This is certainly not all that Kumu does Magnum IPHowever, as the actress said:

Plus, during these seasons, she’s been sort of an extra help in solving cases. For example, I know a lot of people on the island. I also know a lot of information about the flora and fauna that they may not know. So if they find a twig in a certain place, I can say, ‘Oh, well, it’s not from this place, it’s from another place.’ Those kinds of things, those little cultural things that can help them solve a case. But I also know laptops and I know how to make a cocktail and I know how to sing a Hawaiian lullaby to a baby, I know how to operate heavy equipment. I can shoot an Uzi. He’s a quirky, quirky, charming character that amazes me when he writes stuff.

While Kumu doesn’t exactly collect one Uzi every week, he has many skills that have served him well over the years. When I commented to Amy Hill that her character was a woman of many talents, the actress agreed, then she shared something else she loves about Kumu:

I love it, even at this age! I like that he’s older, but he’s not afraid to try new things or do new things or move forward. She says yes to all challenges.

Magnum IP Challenges are rarely lacking for any of the main characters, and they can range from deadly to domestic. It was a recipe for success for many viewers, but CBS canceled the show in May 2022. It would be a difficult decision for the network and definitely bad news for fans. Luckily, after a few months, fans rallied for a save and even a Times Square billboard , Magnum IP has been saved and renewed not for one, but for two seasons on NBC !

Four episodes of Season 5 have aired so far (and all so far are available to stream with a Peacock Premium Subscription ), with new Magnum IP episodes air Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC. Even if the show can’t go on indefinitely (for Jay Hernandez’s hilarious performance, by the way ), there is a lot to look forward to in the near future!
