‘Black Panther’ Costume Designer Ruth Carter Becomes First Black Woman to Win Two Oscars

By winning the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverRuth Carter enters the history of cinema.

Costume designer Ruth Carter entered the history of the Oscars and cinema on Monday. By winning the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forevershe became the first black woman to have two Oscars.

“Thanks to the Academy [l’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, qui décerne les Oscars chaque année, NDLR] pay tribute to the superheroine that is the black woman,” she said upon receiving her award. “She resists, loves and overcomes all tests.”

Known for her many collaborations with Spike Lee, in movies like do the right thing AND malcolm xRuth Carter had already won the Oscar for best costumes for the first Black Panther in 2019.

In 95 editions, only one actress has won the Oscar for best actress: Halle Berry, in 2002 for in the shadow of hate. Nine black women also won the Academy Award for Supporting Actor, including Hattie McDaniel in gone With the Wind.
