There are many actors who naturally leave dangerous on-set stunts to the professionals, not wanting to risk serious injury, but Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise are in a class of their own. Although the latter is 60 and the former is 58, they not only act in extreme action films, but are also (literally) dedicated to their performances. I recently made this comparison while sitting with Reeves at a press day in Los Angeles for director Chad Stahelski’s film. John Wick: Chapter 4and his response was extremely humble, as he expressed amazement at what Cruise has done in the Mission Impossible AND best weapon movie.
Expressing extreme humility, Keanu Reeves compared his highly choreographed, skillful and dynamic work to the john wick movies seem to be “playing in mud” compared to what Tom Cruise did, alluding to the Burj Khalifa sequence in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the actor who flies the jets Top Gun: nonconformist. After praising Jackie Chan’s legendary skills at the beginning of the interview, Reeves said:
What Tom Cruise is doing is extraordinary and special and something that… Again, another legend in another universe. They’re more like playing on the ground in mud and it’s like flying and jumping up and off buildings and helicopters, fighter jets. So what he does in terms of the events that he’s involved in, I think is extraordinary. And his passion for it, his skills, his talent show.
Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise had parallel careers; they’ve never been in a movie together, but both have worked in Hollywood since the early 80’s. Both have had huge action blockbusters and franchises spanning several decades of their respective filmographies, and nothing has slowed them down in the 2020s. Reeves does some of the most intense and insane stunts of all time. John Wick: Chapter 4and now it’s only months away from seeing Cruise ride his bike off a cliff Mission: Impossible – Mortal Judgment Part 1 (which will be exclusive in theaters on July 14).
Moving forward, Reeves found himself among regular viewers as the “beneficiaries” of what Cruise gets in his big-screen adventures. After all, he accepts a comparison between himself and the Top Gun: nonconformist star is that they both love movies and what they do:
I think we’re just the beneficiaries of his excellence, you know? And it’s inspiring. And I think one thing I could say is that I share, as you said, a passion for cinema. We’re lucky to be here and we’re just trying to have fun and hope people like what we’ve done.
Audiences are sure to love what Keanu Reeves has been up to lately, because John Wick: Chapter 4 has received overwhelmingly positive feedback closer to its theatrical release. With an all-star supporting cast that includes Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Rina Sawayama and Scott Adkins, the film will be in theaters worldwide on March 24. .
