It might be hard to believe, but it’s been over a year since then eternal hit theaters and the Marvel Cinematic Universe was introduced to a new cast of cosmic beings. While it initially seemed like big things were to come after the events of the film, especially following the surprise appearance of Harry Styles, not much information has been released regarding a sequel. Now director Chloe Zhao is waking up to the future of the Eternals.
While eternal It opened strongly at the box office when it was released in 2021, to mixed reviews, and given the way things usually go with Marvel movies, by now we’d have heard at least something about a possible sequel. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Rumors of another film had been swirling for some time, and by the end of 2022, fans were convinced. eternal 2 was happening when Big Punch Entertainment shared that Gilgamesh actor Don Lee was preparing the sequel. However, going straight to a direct source, director Chloe Zhao told the Hollywood reporter the following about how things stand with your participation in eternal 2:
No comments. When you’re at Marvel and dealing with such a huge audience, I really appreciate and respect that each of us is so unique. It’s exciting that we are all so different and that we are changing and growing every day. But with a global audience, it’s nearly impossible to make everyone happy, which is like saying everyone is the same. So I think there will definitely be that. [difference of opinion], and you just have to stay true to the kind of film you want to make, who you are, and the people you collaborate with. It’s all you can do, really, and enjoy. Everything else is out of your control.

There seems to have been some talk about the future, it’s just a matter of what to include and what the creative process would look like. Kumail Nanjiani who plays Kingo has also already defended the MCU film and praised Zhao. So while the movie could have done better, in terms of the review, there are definitely people still interested, and I wouldn’t mind seeing what happened after the appearance cut short.
It should be noted that very recently, Marvel star Patton Oswalt retired his eternal 2 statement, as he originally said the movie was going to happen. He later admitted he was “captured by the internet” and would be the last to know if there was a sequel. His brief stint as Pip the Troll in eternal the credits scene could have made for something else, and even if it’s not in a eternal sequel, he could very well be in another MCU movie or TV show. We’ll have to wait and see.
Even if we won’t get eternal 2 in the near future, the next Marvel movies look incredibly good. Fingers crossed that at least some of the Eternals appear in more films, but if not, hopefully confirmed information about a sequel will be shared soon.
