In recent years, Hollywood has had a larger conversation about what needs to change when it comes to the representation of minorities from all walks of life. There have certainly been many steps in the right direction, such as the 2023 Oscars honour All everywhere at once during the weekend, a film especially important to the Asian-American community . Another example is 2022 is going to be a big year for Native American diversity on TV . There are so many facets of diversity to explore, even by segments of the disabled community who is on the cutting edge of basketball comedy sample.
They 2023 new movie release is a remake of the Spanish film of the same name and the same principle. sample revolves around a minor league basketball coach, in this case played by Woody Harrelson, who gets fired from his job and finds himself doing community service for a local basketball team made up of disabled people. We too were very moved [the original movie] he played there gathering all these handicapped into one basketball team. It was very funny. And they captured that in a way where you don’t laugh at people, you laugh with them. So what we wanted to do was get a full cast. People who love basketball are disabled, but they also have the ability to perform. Many of them had never performed before but had to audition for us on tape. And they were all great. Each of them really shined.
It’s amazing to see a movie like sample portraying many disabled actors in authentic roles most performed on the big screen. But, as the director shared, many of the “hundreds” of actors who auditioned had never booked a job before. sample Come. Farrelly shared a funny story as she went into more detail about the audition process. As he continued:
Each of these actors had their moment at the audition. Casey Metcalf lives in Vermont and when he auditioned for the role, he didn’t have a basketball to hold onto. But he lives on a chicken farm, so he was holding a chicken and his was his prop for basketball. And he made us laugh so much that we thought about putting Casey in the movie. And, and it was a, it was a good decision. Because he made us laugh so much. He’s always done fun things like that. He was very creative, but everyone stood out. And if they didn’t, they wouldn’t get the role because they had to stand out from the hundreds and hundreds of people applying for the role.
Casey Metcalfe plays Marlon sample, and is part of the basketball team called “Los Amigos” that coaches the character played by Woody Harrelson in the film. Metcalfe, who has autism, is among those with whom they found their first film credits sample despite a long acting career. Metcalfe began performing with a company called Actors for Autism in 2004 in Los Angeles and was featured in the 2009 documentary. children with cameras.
Metcalfe shared with his local media Seven days in a recent interview, he believes sample it’s a “huge step forward for the development community” and he shared his belief that it’s “society” that makes him and others feel left out. He hopes the film will be a “game changer” for the community.
In recent years you see more stories around people with autism in particular challenged stereotypes including the Netflix dating show love on the spectrum. it’s nice to see sample they also do it for the big screen. sample is playing in theaters now, and you can see our interview with Woody Harrelson on the film also here on Gossipify.
