Warning: SPOILERS for mason perry Season 2 Episode 4, also known as “Chapter Twelve”, is coming soon!
mason perry Season 1 followed the title character and his allies trying to figure out who really killed baby Charlie Dodson, a crime his mother, Emily, had been primed for. Season 2 is going in a different direction with its murder mystery, as it was confirmed in tonight’s episode that brothers Rafael and Matro Gallardo, played by Fabrizio Guido and Peter Mendoza, respectively, did indeed kill Brooks McCutcheon Dewey by Tommy. While the exact circumstances behind this are yet to be revealed, Michael Begler, one of the mason perry The season 2 showrunners opened up to Gossipify about the HBO show’s latest twists and turns, while also giving the main characters a “learning curve” this season.
even before mason perry Season 1 concluded in the summer of 2020, HBO decided to renew it for a second season, and in April 2021, Michael Begler and Jack Amiel were tapped to replace creators/showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald. We’re now halfway through season two, and before the final episode aired, I spoke with Begler, and my first question was why did he and Amiel decide to go full 180 with this girl’s murder mystery? season. it happened in the first season. He replied:
I think we really like the idea, we’ve seen it over and over again, of the defense attorney defending innocent people. And we said, ‘Well, what happens when I’m not? How does an iconic character like Perry Mason fare? And again, the idea that the starting point of “What is justice and what justice looks like for the haves and have-nots,” all of that fueled this idea of playing with expectation and surprise. .
As if Paul Drake’s life wasn’t already complicated enough in these first few episodes of the second season, the character of Chris Chalk found himself involved in the investigation of Brooks McCutcheon and made the biggest discovery ever. Not only was Paul able to trace the gun used to kill Brooks McCutcheon, but he also learned that the Gallardos had rented that exact gun from a community member in their slum. While Rafael and Mateo initially maintained their innocence, it can no longer be denied that they did.
However, Brooks McCutcheon didn’t die because things went wrong with Rafael and Mateo robbing him, or because the brothers didn’t like him. At the end of “Chapter Twelve” tonight, Sofía, Mateo’s wife, found an envelope full of money, which she only found because she told her where she was. So now we know that Brooks’ murder was instigated by someone else, and here’s what Michael Begler had to say about this development:
Knowing there is money means it wasn’t just a simple theft gone wrong. These guys got paid. This is our goal. As you saw in the credits of the episode… we have all these pictures of all the money, and now we’re going to follow the money. Let’s explain that to all of the president’s men.
But wait, there’s yet another problem in this episode! After Paul Drake handed the gun to Matthew Rhys’ Perry Mason and Juliet Rylance’s Della Street, these two agreed to keep it safe in the law office while Paul watched. It goes without saying that withholding key evidence like this is a big no-no, and after assuming to Michael Begler that the gun is likely to upset Perry and Della’s Gallardo defense again, I questioned him about his thought process behind the inclusion of this particular complication. This is where Begler hit the “learning curve” for our core trio of tracks, saying:
Without revealing anything, maybe he will come back, I don’t want to say. but as jack [Amiel] and I was like, put a gun on the table, you know it’s going to be used one way or another… I compare it to all new lawyers in a way. Della studies law, Perry didn’t even go to law and Paul is a researcher. Yes, they got a mistrial against Emily Dodson, but they’re still rookies and will make some rookie mistakes.
There’s no denying that these versions of Perry, Della, and Paul are capable adults with unique abilities, but Michael Begler is right to point out that they’re nowhere near the pros that previous versions of these characters were more than half. half a century ago, and not just because these events take place in the early 1930s versus the 1950s. We may never see them reach that level of experience on this show, but in what’s to come, they have enough to worry us about in this case as we enter the second half of season two. Meanwhile, Eric Lange’s Gene Holcomb, the twisted LAPD detective involved in the Charlie Dodson case and who had been in business with Brooks McCutcheon prior to his death, has been trying to get to the bottom of Brooks’ other deals, particularly the deal he had with the now deceased boss. and Goldstein’s best products.
new episodes of mason perry premiering Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO as part of the 2023 TV schedule. It’s not yet known whether the series will return for season 3, but you can rewatch previous episodes with an HBO Max subscription.
