Warning: SPOILERS for the titans “Caul’s Folly” and “Dick & Carol & Ted & Kory” episodes are coming soon!
Conner Kent’s Superboy aka Joshua Orpin has been through a lot titans Season 4, which begins with her meeting Lex Luthor, one of her genetic relatives, only to see Titus Welliver’s version of Superman’s adversary die a heartbreaking death soon after. But even without Lex, a series of events lead to Conner acting more like him and even resembling him, as evidenced by his shaved head. Now, the show’s two-episode mid-season premiere has seen Conner take even stranger steps, which, as showrunner Greg Walker told Gossipify, will lead the show into “awkward” territory with this character.
Ahead of the premieres of “Caul’s Folly” and “Dick & Carol & Ted & Kory” for HBO Max subscribers, I spoke with Greg Walker about the midseason premiere, which he directed, marking the first time he’s “going behind the camera that way of titans. Considering Superboy’s Luthor-like behavior of late and actions his teammates wouldn’t necessarily approve of, I mentioned the character’s mentality to Walker, and he said the following:
Well, you know, there’s only a few actions the team wouldn’t agree with. I think everyone knows that Conner needs to explore… very soon, and we established months ago, the struggle that Conner has in terms of identity. Am I Superman’s son or am I Lex’s son? And this exploration of this struggle has to come full circle, which means it has to come to Lex’s side to figure out, “Am I Lex or not?”, right? As writers, we didn’t want to go around and have him shave his head for a week, then put on a leather jacket and act tough, and then say, “Yeah, Lex’s not for me.” He needed to see in himself that he’d crossed a line, and I think some fans will feel uncomfortable. Because he crosses a line, I think. I was uncomfortable with how far he went, but I think it was important to the character of him seeing him and then coming back and realizing it’s not him and then going back to the Titans.
when we stay with titans‘ title hero in the mid-season finale of season 4, their ally, Lisa Ambalavanar’s Jinx, was killed by Mother Mayhem and Sebastian Sanger completed the ritual to become Brother Blood. However, the protagonists then mysteriously disappeared, although in the case of Beast Boy we knew that he had been specially brought to The Red. As for the others, they returned safely to their reality a few hours later at the start of “Caul’s Folly.” , but it didn’t take long for Conner to start doing his thing again. After discovering a book left behind by Lex Luthor that contained clues to what the Blood Cult had planned for Trigon, he kept a letter written by Lex for his eyes only and left it in Parts Unknown.
Superboy then only reappeared at the end of “Dick & Carol & Ted & Kory”, when he approached Sebastian Sanger in a restaurant and offered him a drink so they could toast the “coming” together. Sebastian left Mother Mayhem’s side after learning that he couldn’t hurt Raven, her half-sister, without hurting himself. Also, he hinted that he’s just a tool used to bring Trigon, his demon father, back to life, and once he does, he’ll be a “nobody” again. But now Conner is hatching his own plan to lure Sebastian into, and that’s exactly the kind of thing Lex Luthor would have done.
But as Greg Walker told me, it’s not like Conner playing Lex Luthor is permanent. After several seasons of channeling his inner Superman, titans Season 4 was a chance to explore the other half of his legacy, but it was also important that it wasn’t just about a quick personality change. Thus, Conner will continue to follow Luthor’s path until he crosses that line that Walker mentions, which might make some viewers uncomfortable, but that’s the point.
titans AND destiny patrol both were canceled in January, but luckily for the old show, Greg Walker tells me it “hasn’t disrupted” what was planned for season 4. The remaining episodes of the show will continue to air on Thursdays. hbo max (opens in a new tab)and be sure to check out what’s currently airing using our 2023 TV schedule.
