The government wants to “humanize” nursing homes by agreeing to house animals there

The Minister of Health, Catherine Vautrin, is “favorable” to the possibility of residents of nursing homes being accompanied by an animal.

Dog, cat or canary: the Government was in favor of establishing the right of residents of nursing homes to be accompanied by their pet, as suggested by a provision of the “aging well” bill that parliamentarians will debate again in mid- this year. March.

“I am in favor (…) of opening in the law the possibility of hosting domestic animals in nursing homes,” the Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity, Catherine Vautrin, said this Friday, March 1, on X (ex Twitter).

He invited parliamentarians to “address this social issue with a view to further humanizing our nursing homes” during their upcoming debates on the bill.

Amendment presented by LR Philippe Juvin

Currently, nursing homes are free to accept or reject pets. An amendment by doctor and LR MP Philippe Juvin, included in this bill, proposes creating a right for older people to settle in an establishment with their four-legged companion.

The text will be discussed in a mixed commission (CMP), in a small commission, on March 12 in the National Assembly. If this step is conclusive, the bill will be voted on in the Assembly on March 19 and then in the Senate on March 27.

The separation between older people who enter nursing homes and their pets “is heartbreaking”, especially because “when they leave home, they lose their way”, the minister delegate responsible for older people, Fadila, highlighted on France 2 on Friday. Khattabi, stating that he supports the measure which would be a “very good step forward.”

However, “we will have to be realistic,” we will not be able to move into a nursing home with “an animal like a boa,” he warned. Rather, it will be “dogs, cats, goldfish, canaries” that will be welcomed in the 7,500 nursing homes in France, public, private or associative.
